With their numerous therapeutic properties, their biological activities are also accompanied by safe and efficient corrosion protection abilities with negligible negative effects on man and his environment. Their superior inhibiting potency for metal corrosion over some other compounds is attributed to their rate of molecular adsorption at the metal/solution interface due to the presence of the nitrogen atom bearing the sp2 electron pair known to act as metal surface anchoring sites. This review covers older and most recent investigations related to the application of a number of benzimidazole derivatives as corrosion inhibitors for industrial metals in many simulated and real aqueous media. The mechanisms of corrosion protection for each inhibition system have also been highlighted via experimental and theoretical based approaches in acid, alkaline and near neutral media. The use of this class of compounds for microbial corrosion inhibition and sweet corrosion have also been proposed for future studies since reported research in this aspect are relatively scanty.

There is continued interest in the assembly of heterometallic metallosupramolecular assemblies due to the potential for new structural types and/or interesting chemical and physical properties. Two novel methylene-linked bis-2-pyridyl-1,2,3-triazole ligands (1a, 1b) were synthesized through CuAAC “click” chemistry between dichloromethane (DCM), sodium azide, and the appropriate ethynylpyridine, giving the shortest possible “regular” bis-pyridyl-1,2,3-triazole. The first example of bis-coordination of two 2-pyridyl-1,2,3-triazoles (Rpytri) around one Pt(II) center is reported, giving exclusive formation of head-to-tail [Pt(Rpytri)2]2+ complexes with vacant binding sites suitable for complexation with other metals and the formation of heterometallic assemblies. The concentration-dependent formation of an equilibrium mixture of a heterometallic [Pd2Pt2(L)4]8+ [4 + 4] square and [Pd3Pt3(L)6]12+ [6 + 6] hexagon was observed, and at lower concentrations ([reactants] = 1.5 mM) hexamer formation was negligible. The [Pt(L)2]2+ building block could also be utilized in the synthesis of a concentration-independent [Cu2Pt2(L)4]6+ metallomacrocyle. These compounds were characterized with 1H, 13C, and 1H DOSY NMR spectroscopies, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and in some cases X-ray crystallography.

A series of novel 3-substituted isocoumarins was prepared via Pd-catalysed coupling processes and screened in vitro for antifungal activity against Candida species. This article reviews recent studies on intra- and intermolecular transfer of the aryl ligand bonded to Pd(II) and Pt(II). Cationic arylpalladium complexes with bpy and THF ligands undergo intermolecular aryl group transfer to produce biaryl via a diarylpalladium intermediate. This reaction is applied to cyclization of cationic dinuclear arylpalladium complexes, affording the crown ether derivative with biphenylene units. Analogous arylplatinum complexes do not form diaryl complexes via transmetalation, while they react with CO and phenylallene to cause replacement of the coordinated solvent and insertion of the small molecules into the Pt-C bond, respectively. Conproportionation of PtCl2(cod) and PtPh2(cod) produces PtCl(Ph)(cod), which is induced by dissociation of a Cl ligand from the former complex. PtCl2(cod) reacts also with diarylplatinum complexes with bpy and dppe. Disproportionation of PtPh(CH2COMe)(cod) and conproportionation of PtPh2(cod) and Pt(CH2COMe)2(cod) take place at 50 C, but the rates of apparently reversible reactions differ from each other. Addition of OH- to a solution of PtI(Ph)(cod) causes intermolecular phenyl ligand transfer to produce PtPh2(cod). The dinuclear intermediate complex with bridging OH ligand is prepared from an independent route and fully characterized. The complex causes transmetalation of aryl group of aryl boronic acid.

Macrocyclic salen-bis-NHC hybrid ligands and their application to the synthesis of enantiopure Bi- and trimetallic complexes

Salen and NHC ligands are among the most important ligands for homogeneous catalysis. We have recently reported bimetallic complexes, in which both motifs have been merged for the first time. However, the intermetallic distances, which play a crucial role for cooperative bimetallic catalysis, were probably not appropriate in these first-generation hybrid catalysts. To generate heterobimetallic salen/NHC hybrid complexes with intermetallic distances suitable for cooperative catalysis, chiral macrocyclic hybrid ligands featuring a salen and two linked NHC donor moieties have been prepared in the present study. For the ligand formation, chiral enantiopure diamines as well as chiral enantiopure bisimidazoles were employed, and a matched/mismatched situation was found depending on the configuration of both chirality sources. Regioselective complexation of Zn(II), Ni(II), and Pd(II) by the salen N2O2 coordination sphere was efficiently accomplished. Subsequent coordination of the NHC units was achieved for Ag(I), Cu(I), Au(I), and Pd(II), in the latter case by oxidative transmetalation with Pd2(dba)3. X-ray crystal structure analyses for Ni/Ag2 and Pd/Ag2 complexes show strongly puckered macrocycles, in which one of the NHC-bound Ag(I) centers is in close proximity to the salen-bound Ni(II) or Pd(II) centers and in which this Ag(I) apparently interacts with both salen O-donor atoms. Preliminary data for the 1,4-addition of an oxindole to a nitroolefin and for the Conia-ene reaction of an alpha-cyanoacetate are reported.

Palladium-catalyzed regioselective silaboration of 1,2-dienes

Palladium complexes catalyzed regioselective addition of the Si-B bond of (dimethylphenylsilyl)pinacolborane to allenes in good yields. In the silaboration of terminal allenes having electron-donating substituents such as alkyl and methoxy groups, the Si-B bond added to the internal C=C bond with regioselective B-C and Si-C bond formation at the central and substituted carbon atoms of the allene, respectively. In contrast, the silylborane preferably added to the terminal C=C bond with exclusive Si-C bond formation at the terminal carbon atom in the silaboration of allenes bearing electron-withdrawing groups such as perfluoroalkyl group. 1,3-Disubstituted allenes also underwent the silaboration in good yields with varying regio- as well as stereoselectivity. The silyl and boryl groups of the 2-borylallylsilanes thus prepared were selectively utilized for further synthetic elaboration. Palladium-catalyzed coupling of the 2-borylallylsilanes with aryl iodides afforded the corresponding 2-arylallylsilanes in fair-to-good yields. 2-Boryl-pi-allylpalladium complexes were successfully prepared by the reaction of the 2-borylallylsilanes with PdCl2(CH3CN)2.
