Extended Ladder-Type Benzo[k]tetraphene-Derived Oligomers

Well-defined, fused-ring aromatic oligomers represent promising candidates for the fundamental understanding and application of advanced carbon-rich materials, though bottom-up synthesis and structure?property correlation of these compounds remain challenging. In this work, an efficient synthetic route was employed to construct extended benzo[k]tetraphene-derived oligomers with up to 13 fused rings. The molecular and electronic structures of these compounds were clearly elucidated. Precise correlation of molecular sizes and crystallization dynamics was established, thus demonstrating the pivotal balance between intermolecular interaction and molecular mobility for optimized processing of highly ordered solids of these extended conjugated molecules.

Ring expansion of a platinacyclopropane to a platinacyclopentane by double insertion of isocyanides into Pt-C bonds

A platinum isocyanide complex bearing a eta2-TCNE ligand, (eta2-TCNE)Pt(eta-CNC6H3-2,6-Me 2)2 (1), was synthesized, and its crystallographic study revealed the coordination mode of the eta2-TCNE ligand to be a typical metallacyclopropane extreme, in which back-donation from metal to TCNE contributes primarily to the stabilization of 1. Treatment of 1 with 2 equiv of CNC6H3-2,6-Me2 resulted in ring expansion of the platinacyclopropane by insertion of CNC6H3-2,6-Me 2 into each Pt-C bond of the metallacycle, leading to formation of a new complex having a platinacyclopentane structure, (TCNE)Pt(eta-CNC 6H3-2,6-Me2)4 (4). Although the molecular structures of palladium and nickel homologues of 1 were close to the corresponding metallacyclopropane, no metallacyclopentane complex was obtained under similar conditions. Studies on variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy and spin-saturation transfer measurement of 4 showed exchange of the imidoyl CNC6H3-2,6-Me2 group and the coordinated CNC6H3-2,6-Me2 ligand in solution, suggesting the ring expansion to be reversible.

Crystal structure and spin crossover studies on bis(2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) iron(II) perchlorate

The structure of the [Fe(bzimpy)2] (ClO4)2 ¡¤ xH2O system (x=0.25) was determined by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The Fe(II) ion is hexacoordinated by six donor nitrogen atoms. The magnetic properties of the complex were investigated by powder magnetic susceptibility measurements and ESR. The freshly prepared sample does not show any traces of iron(III) impurities but these are formed as a function of time. After 1 year the sample contains 8.2% iron(III) as shown by UV spectroscopy and indicated by geff=4.3 and 2.0 in its ESR spectrum. This explains the recorded x versus T behaviour at low temperature: with increasing temperature the x value decreases according to the Curie-Weiss law for a S=5/2 system having an effective g=4.3. Above 220 K a continuous increase in the x value is observed and a spin crossover applies. The spin transition is not complete at room temperature. A pronounced hysteresis is observed upon heating/cooling the sample between 220 and 414 K on the basis of magnetic data and infrared spectra.

Redox-neutral photocatalytic strategy for selective C?C bond cleavage of lignin and lignin models via PCET process

It remains challenging to achieve the selective cleavage of C?C bonds in lignin or lignin model compounds to produce aromatic products in high yield and selectivity. We have developed a redox-neutral photocatalytic strategy to accomplish this goal in both beta-O-4 and beta-1 lignin models at room temperature (RT) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process without any pretreatments of substrate, by adjusting the alkalinity of base to obtain a lignin models/base PCET pair with a bond dissociation free energy close to 102 kcal/mol. Without breaking down Cbeta?Cgamma bond and any C?O bonds, this PCET method is 100% atom economy and produces exclusive Calpha?Cbeta bond cleavage products, such as benzaldehydes (up to 97%) and phenyl ethers (up to 96%), in high to excellent yields and selectivities. Preliminary studies indicated that the PCET strategy is also effective for the depolymerization of native lignin at RT, thus providing significantly important foundation to the depolymerization of lignin.

Total synthesis of kendomycin: A macro-C-glycosidation approach

Kendomycin, also known as (-)-TAN 2162, is a novel polyketide-derived ansamycin isolated from Streptomyces sp., which exhibits potent antagonist and agonist activities at the endothelin and calcitonin receptors, respectively. This bacterial metabolite also possesses a strong antibiotic activity against a range of gram-positive and -negative bacteria and cytostatic effects on the growth of human cancer cell lines. When a novel macroglycosidation reaction is employed as the key step, the first enantioselective total synthesis of kendomycin has been accomplished. A Friedel-Crafts-type ring closure of the acyclic precursor containing tetrahydropyran and benzofuran moieties produces the macrocycle as a single stereoisomer in good yield, thus establishing the aryl C-glycosidic linkage of the ansa core. This reaction requires a phenolic glycosyl acceptor and appears to proceed through a rapid O-glycosidation followed by a slow rearrangement to an aryl C-glycoside. The requisite secomacrocycle is prepared by the Pd(0)-catalyzed B-alkyl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of two subunits, which in turn can be expeditiously assembled from readily available building blocks in a modular fashion.
