Synthesis, Characterization, and Application of Segphos Derivative Having Diferrocenylphosphino-Donor Moieties

An axially chiral bisphosphine, Fc-Segphos (1), which possesses diferrocenylphosphino-donor moieties, was prepared as a racemate, and its optical resolution was achieved by the use of chiral HPLC. Ligand 1 coordinated to a palladium(II) cation in a bidentate fashion to construct a unique chiral environment at the palladium center due to the sterically demanding ferrocenyl groups. Ligand (R)-1 was applied in the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis of axially chiral allenes showing good enantioselectivity of up to 92% ee. In general, (R)-1 displayed better enantioselectivity than the parent Segphos in the palladium-catalyzed reaction, and the Pd/(R)-1 species showed up to 18% ee enhancement over the (R)-Segphos-derived palladium catalyst.

High-Crystallinity I?-Conjugated Small Molecules Based on Thienylene-Vinylene-Thienylene: Critical Role of Self-Organization in Photovoltaic, Charge-Transport, and Morphological Properties

Narrow-band-gap small molecules with I?-extended backbones are promising donor materials for solution-processed bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a series of acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) photovoltaic small molecules incorporating thienylene-vinylene-thienylene (TVT) as a central D unit and alkyl-substituted rhodanine or 2-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)rhodanine as terminal A units are designed and synthesized. Their physical properties including photoabsorption, electronic energy levels, hole mobility, and morphological characteristics are systematically investigated. Using solvent vapor annealing (SVA), the morphologies of the BHJ photoactive layers composed of these small-molecule donors and a [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) acceptor can be properly modulated. As a result of increased crystallinity of the donors and desired phase segregation between the donors and PC71BM upon rapid SVA treatment, the photovoltaic performances of the resultant OSC devices undergo drastic enhancement. The results reported here indicate that high-efficiency small-molecule OSCs can be achieved through rational design of the TVT-based molecular framework and optimization of the nanoscale phase-segregated morphology via proper SVA treatment.

A concise and convergent total synthesis of the highly cytotoxic marine natural products iejimalide A-D (1-4) is reported, which relies on an effective ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction of a cyclization precursor containing no less than 10 double bonds. Because of the exceptional sensitivity of this polyunsaturated intermediate and its immediate precursors toward acid, base, and even gentle warming, the assembly process hinged upon the judicious choice of protecting groups and the careful optimization of all individual transformations. As a consequence, particularly mild protocols for Stille as well as Suzuki reactions of elaborate coupling partners have been developed that hold considerable promise for applications in other complex settings. Moreover, a series of non-natural “iejimalide-like” compounds has been prepared, differing from the natural lead in the polar head groups linked to the macrolide’s N-terminus. With the aid of these compounds it was possible to uncover the hitherto unknown effect of iejimalide and analogues on the actin cytoskeleton. Their capacity to depolymerize this microfilament network rivals that of the latrunculins which constitute the standard in the field. Structural modifications of the peptidic terminus in 2 are thereby well accommodated, without compromising the biological effects. The iejimalides hence constitute an important new class of probe molecules for chemical biology in addition to their role as promising lead structures for the development of novel anticancer agents.

Enzymatic synthesis of biodiesel from Jatropha tanjorensis Ellis and Saroja and its potential as biodiesel feedstock

21st century has almost become “Green century” with an increased demand for plant products (bioenergy-oil). Hence, to develop a natural biodiesel feedstock, common species of Jatropha in and around Thanjavur is selected based on its enriched monoalkyl ester content which could be a good source for generating biofuels. Tanjorensis seed oil were extracted and analyzed for its physico-chemical properties such as % free fatty acid, acid value iodine, peroxide, saponification values. P. aeruginosa crude lipase treated transesterification followed by GC-MS analysis of oil proved that oleic acid (37.3 %) and linoleic acid (33.3 %) were the principal fatty acids while palmitic acid and stearic acid being the major saturated fatty acids. Oil contents of Tanjorensis seed oil were comparable with the oil extracted from other species of Jatropha and were found to be close to oil from Jatropha curcas. Tanjorensis seed oil extracts could be useful in industrial applications and as a biodiesel feedstock.

Chemistry informer libraries: A chemoinformatics enabled approach to evaluate and advance synthetic methods

Major new advances in synthetic chemistry methods are typically reported using simple, non-standardized reaction substrates, and reaction failures are rarely documented. This makes the evaluation and choice of a synthetic method difficult. We report a standardized complex molecule diagnostic approach using collections of relevant drug-like molecules which we call chemistry informer libraries. With this approach, all chemistry results, successes and failures, can be documented to compare and evolve synthetic methods. To aid in the visualization of chemistry results in drug-like physicochemical space we have used an informatics methodology termed principal component analysis. We have validated this method using palladium- and copper-catalyzed reactions, including Suzuki-Miyaura, cyanation and Buchwald-Hartwig amination.
